How LEGO created Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappe and Vinicius Junior sets

The pictures of Ronaldo and Mbappe contain 490 pieces, including the 2022 World Cup winner Messi’s 500 pieces and Vinicius Junior’s 510 pieces.

“We needed to consider what hairpiece we were using and how to correct the face,” said LEGO’s Sanne van Kesteren, speaking to like.

“We wanted to show any other details they had, like Messi’s tattoos, for example. We gathered a lot of options on wigs and facial expressions and were constantly going back and forth with the teams, to show and explore what we were doing.

“Especially regarding the expressions: ‘Should we have a more smiling face, a more determined face?’ We decided that Ronaldo would have two faces.

“We were a little nervous when we were showing Siuuu’s face. This was the face we believed in the most, because it’s very special and kids will love it.

“Of course, when we showed it, we were a little nervous – but the team really loved it. They were talking about it all the time, saying ‘I love this face’. That’s the face in the package shot.”

Why Lionel Messi found a LEGO set ‘surreal’

Messi and Ronaldo have additional sets of football legends. Designers can recreate Siuuu’s pose or bicycle kick in a 854-piece model, while Messi’s design is flexible to show the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner celebrating or dribbling with the help of 958 pieces.

“One of the highlights for me was being able to go and meet Lionel Messi and show him the collection I’ve been working on for months,” designer Freddie Charters told the outlet.

“I’m a huge football fan…if you’re a football fan, should you be a fan of Messi. He’s a great player and I’ve followed his life and career since I was very young.

“He expressed that his family is really interested in building LEGO. He said it was surreal for him to now see himself in LEGO form and that his family will now be building a set based on him, which is amazing.”

The set of 1,427 items depicting Messi is intended for fans who are at least 14 years old, and is designed to be a “stunning piece of 3D wall art” filled with “Easter eggs that reference his life and career.”
