There’s nothing that excites me more than a game with a simple concept and engaging in it as fully as possible. So, here’s BREKEKEKEX, a stylish action/3D fighting game that pits you against frogs, cultists, guys on pigs, guys with buckets on their heads, “and worse.” It’s tantalizingly ridiculous; in what world does a Dragon Ball arena fighter where you fight frogs somehow pass as a good pitch? My only one, at least.
I’m not sure I can tell you much about this world. The first character you play as appears to be a trident-wielding teenager, a young boy riding a pig who accompanies him to witness a fight between said teenager and the frog. Then follows fights which promise to be frenetic and precise. There is “no such thing as hard targeting”, rather you need to be aware of where you swing your weapon when facing your opponent. You have nothing to defend yourself with either, leaving your only option to skillfully control your every move, which seems like a challenge when facing a frog that can hit you with its tongue.
There will apparently be multiple playable characters, all with their own movement styles, available weapons, and combat options, encouraging you to learn how each of them works. The game’s Steam page also makes it clear that it’s not an RPG, so there are no skills to unlock or stats to improve, it’s all up to you and the frogenemy in front of you. I’m honestly very happy to see an arena fighter taken with such sincerity and care. It’s a genre that often gets pushed aside due to its meatbag vibe, so it’s nice to see one of them embrace the weirdness and skill-focused combat.
BREKEKEKEX (a name I don’t quite understand) doesn’t have a release date yet, but it is available as a wishlist on Steam.
