It is the 1,000th day of the war since the Hamas-led attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza. Other conflicts have emerged in the region, and the fragile ceasefire agreement shows the scars of continuing attacks. Both Israelis and Palestinians are tired of these pressures.
The fate of more than two million Palestinians in Gaza, most of whom are displaced and living among the rubble, remains uncertain. Israeli forces controlled more than half the territory under a ceasefire that took effect on October 10, but the Israeli government has expanded this and says it aims to control 70 percent.
Few people can get in or out. Additional steps for a ceasefire, including the disarmament of Hamas and the massive task of reconstruction, have stalled.
“There is still a lot to be done so that a semblance of normalcy can return, and we are very far from it,” Nicola von Arx, regional director of the International Committee of the Red Cross, said this week.
