Local media should contribute to “telling good stories about Hong Kong” amid global turmoil, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said, as the city formulates its first five-year plan to align with national development.
Speaking at the annual awards ceremony organized by the Hong Kong Newspaper Association on Friday, Li said that local media are not only witnesses and recorders of events, but must also facilitate and contribute to the progress of the city and China.
“In the face of the current turbulent and ever-changing global situation and geopolitical developments, I believe that media workers will uphold their professional ethics and adhere to the core values ββto advance the interests of the country and Hong Kong,” he said.
Lee called on the media to “do great things” by telling good stories about Hong Kong and China and enabling the city to serve the country.
“(The media should) constantly contribute their strength to telling good stories about Hong Kong and China. Outstanding journalists will take up their task courageously, with lofty aspirations to contribute to national development,” he said.
Lee added that the media can exert a positive influence by telling stories to residents and people abroad that “illustrate the realities of Hong Kong’s development, opportunities and advantages.”
He noted that this year marks the beginning of the 15th National Five-Year Plan from 2026 to 2030, which focused, among other things, on shaping China’s discourse and narrative.
