Big things are coming to Payday 2, with Sidetrack Games announcing that the game will be ported to the all-new Diesel Engine 3.0, bringing performance improvements, a small game install, 64-bit support and more to the 13-year-old game.
This update will enter open beta on June 30, lasting until the end of July to allow the team to resolve issues and for modders to update their work.
The team breaks down the main features as follows:
- The long-awaited port to 64 bits
- An upgrade from DX9 to DX11 rendering
- Reduced game file size to ~32 GB
- Faster loading times on SSDs
- 6 character lobby codes
- And more…
A 64-bit executable and the use of DX11 for rendering should both go a long way in ensuring that Payday 2 remains playable and compatible with PCs in the future.

Starbreeze Games themselves are still hard at work on Payday 3, working to revamp the new game’s various features, add more content, and more. But Payday 2 remained popular among fans of the series, and so Starbreeze handed over future management of that game to Sidetrack Games in 2025. Sidetrack’s roots lie within the modding community, formerly known as MUG Team and having previously handled development of RAID: World War II for Starbreeze.
