By Saturday morning, President Volodymyr Zelensky had issued one of his most specific public alerts: He said intelligence indicated a massive Russian attack was expected within 48 hours.
“Please take care of yourselves and heed air raid warnings,” Zelensky wrote on Saturday morning. The framing went beyond routine warning language. He described what the Ukrainian intelligence services identified as indicating a strike being prepared, and not merely expected.
Friday’s gun show was not a military facility. It was a civilian space for people involved in Ukraine’s domestic defense procurement, a sector that Kiev urgently expanded as the duration of the Russian operation consumed Western transfer timelines and a local arms manufacturing base became strategically necessary. What the cost of the strike will be in terms of employees is still partly unknown. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the ASEAN summit in Manila that US arms shipments to Ukraine were unacceptable, a warning delivered as Russian forces were targeting Ukrainian cities. No communication from Manila has been announced that affects the timing of the imminent attack that Zelensky is now describing.
The broader US security posture has been significantly affected by the third week of US operations against Iran, which have consumed surveillance, planning, and diplomatic resources. No redeployment of US air defense assets from the Gulf to Ukraine has been announced. NATO allies in the east have raised their air defense preparations but have not expanded operational coverage to include Ukrainian airspace.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said that the air raid warnings issued on Saturday covered all regions of the country. Emergency services in Kyiv were put on standby. The city’s subway system, which had served as a collective shelter during previous bombings, was ready for this role. The practical question facing Kiev residents is the same one they have faced in each previous barrage of attacks, modified only by the specificity of Saturday’s warning: whether or not the next 48 hours will be normal, and whether the alert that is eventually issued will be followed by a short-lived warning or the continued presence of too many objects in the air at once.
The exact contents of the intelligence cited by Zelensky are not public. What Russian leaders have actually prepared, and on what timetable, is unknown from the outside. What Zelensky’s warning record indicates is that when he mentions a window of time, something usually arrives within it. Whether what arrives will match the description of “huge” in the terminology of the Russian operation, or will be something smaller, is information that only the next two days will provide.
