Monaco sacks Pocognoli and Lille appoints Ancelotti G Trends

Monaco sacked its coach Sebastian Bocconioli after the team failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Bocconioli replaced Adi Hutter in October last year after leading Union Saint-Gilloise to the Belgian Pro League title in 2024-25.

However, after crashing out of the Champions League in the play-off round, losing both legs to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco could only manage a win. Seventh place in the French League 1finishing six points adrift of fourth place, which would have secured a place in the Champions League third qualifying round.

Monaco will instead enter the Conference League play-offs, where that disappointment cost Pocognoli his job.

Meanwhile, Lille, who finished third in Ligue 1 to secure a place in the Champions League round-robin, have appointed Carlo Ancelotti’s son Davide as their new coach.

Ancelotti replaces Bruno Genesio, who left Lille after his two-year contract at Stade Pierre Maurois expired.

The 36-year-old worked as an assistant to his father in a group of different clubs and briefly with the Brazilian national team.

He took over as coach of Botafogo last July, but was dismissed in December, just over five months after taking charge, after winning 15 of the 33 matches he played.

“I am very proud and happy, and I thank President Olivier Letang for his trust and for this opportunity,” Ancelotti told Lille’s official website.

“We talked a lot together, and I found a human connection and compatible ideas and values. The LOSC project resonates with me, with a clear identity, demands and hard work.

“It is a serious, ambitious and competitive club that is a regular presence on the European scene. It is an honor for me to represent Lille today.”
