Kyle Busch‘s wife, Samantha Buschhonors the late NASCAR legend following his death on a day when the racer was supposed to be spending time with his children.
“This still doesn’t feel real at all. I was up all night thinking about what today should have been like for Kyle and the kids. The Father’s Day cards that were already made were sitting in a drawer with no one to give them to. I was trying to figure out how to cope with a day that was supposed to be filled with so much joy for them,” Samantha wrote via Instagram on Sunday, June 21st. “He was the father who never missed an opportunity to be silly, to race around the neighborhood with the kids, to scoop them up in his arms, or to stay up a little later to read another book, another question, another moment.”
She continued: “Nothing made him prouder than being the father of Brexton and Lennix. Seeing these memories hurts more than I can explain, but they also remind me how lucky we were to have him.”
Samantha ended her post with a message to Kyle, sharing that her family – which includes son Brexton, 11, and daughter Lennix, 4 – “(misses) her every second of every day.”
“Our hearts hurt for you, but it’s more than that. Your absence is something we feel physically. Our bodies hurt because we miss you, because we reach for someone who isn’t there, because we love someone we can no longer hold,” Samantha wrote. “I will continue to tell your stories, share your laughs and make sure Brexton and Lennix always know how much they were loved by their father. Happy Father’s Day. We love you and miss you more than words can express.”
Alongside the message, Samantha shared several clips of Kyle with her children over the years. In one video, the family hugged each other lovingly while standing at a race track.
In May it was announced that Kyle had died unexpectedly at the age of 41. A day before his death, the racer was hospitalized after he was found unresponsive in a racing simulator in North Carolina. Obtained a death certificate from Us weekly revealed that Kyle had been suffering from pneumonia for “days or weeks” before his death, which progressed to sepsis, a life-threatening blood infection that can cause multiple organs to fail.
Samantha addressed Kyle’s death the following month, sharing a statement signed by herself, Brexton and Lennix.
“As a family we wanted to take a moment to say thank you,” she wrote via Instagram. “The prayers, messages, flowers, meals, hugs and countless acts of kindness have carried us through the most heartbreaking days of our lives. Although our hearts have been completely shattered, we have felt God’s presence and His arms wrapping tightly around us through each and every one of you.”
She continued, “The love that has surrounded our family during this unimaginable time has provided comfort in the midst of so much pain. Knowing the impact Kyle had on others and seeing how they honor him through every single act of generosity is a true testament to how special Kyle is to so many people. There are moments when the weight of this loss seems unbearable, and yet through all of you, God has shown us time and time again that we are not alone.”
Samantha concluded by passing on “family and friends to fans and complete strangers” because they “showed up for us.”
“Thank you for loving our family so much,” she wrote. “Thank you for loving Kyle. Thank you for honoring him. We may never find the words to fully express what your support means to us, but please know that we are deeply grateful.”
