After Criminal minds The new season started with a surprising defeat, according to showrunners Erica Messer addressed whether there would be more on-screen deaths.
During an exclusive interview with Us weeklyMesser commented on possible cameo appearances from the original Criminal minds The cast said, “I always feel like there has to be an important reason for these cameos (like a funeral), and right now we don’t have anything we’re aiming for in that direction for this season. No more funerals.”
Messer’s update came after the return of the hit Paramount+ series Luke premiered on Thursday, May 28 (Adam Rodriguezz) to mourn a personal loss while helping the BAU solve a case. It wasn’t until the end of the two-part premiere that viewers learned that his dog Roxy had to be put down.
“I don’t think we can ever be prepared if something ever happened to a beloved character, whether they’re four-legged or not,” Messer explained. “If you don’t have a pet, you probably know someone who does.”
After 19 seasons, Criminal Minds has found opportunities to kill off beloved characters over the years. Messer knew the revelation would harm viewers.
“It’s the loss of a family member. And for those who watched the show back in the day (when it was on CBS), you definitely met Roxy when you first met Luke,” she noted. “It was devastating for all of us to break this story. We all truly felt the loss.”
She continued: “I had to warn Adam in advance that this is the story we’re sending you to and it’s going to be really difficult. I would say that there probably wasn’t a dry eye when we were reading through it, when we were filming it, and certainly not during the screening. That really touched everyone. So I imagine our audience will be just as touched as the rest of us.”

“It’s this idea of a new beginning. It’s been a year in our story world,” the screenwriter noted to Us. “So they’re facing new challenges – but there’s also a bit of hope in that. It holds the potential for even better things.”
