YellowstoneThe spin-off introduced Kayce Dutton to a new profession – but what is the job of a US Marshal?
When viewers were introduced to Kayce (Luke Grimes) On YellowstoneThe Dutton family member worked as a livestock broker and commissioner for the Montana Livestock Association, which enabled him to protect livestock and enforce livestock laws. He also had a background as a former US Navy SEAL.
Kayce’s early career proved useful Marshalswhich premiered in March 2026, followed his decision to become a marshal. The CBS show follows Kayce as he “leaves ranch life behind to join an elite unit” of U.S. Marshals while “combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to seek justice in Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
So far, Kayce has helped identify threats to society – but what exactly is part of his job description as US Marshal? The job includes “the apprehension of federal fugitives, the protection of federal judges, the transportation of federal prisoners, the implementation of the witness security program, and the management of confiscated assets of criminal enterprises,” according to its official website.
Grimes, 42, previously commented on the concept Marshals before its premiere.
“I’m my own worst critic,” Grimes told Entertainment Weekly in February 2026. “I thought, ‘If you do a poll about who would want a spinoff, I don’t know if Kayce would be at the top of that list. I think there are other characters that would rather see her.'”

Using that as motivation, Grimes added, “So, there was a fire under me. It has to be good. If it’s not good, I’d rather not do it. We tried really hard to make sure that every one of the original Yellowstone fans had something to grab onto.”
He continued, “But if you’ve never seen Yellowstone, we wanted this show to make sense on its own. I think we did that as best as we could.”
Although Grimes was given the chance to lead his own show, he wasn’t sure what the story would be.
“They started bringing it up when we were filming the final episodes of the original series. There were a few offers for a spinoff, but I hadn’t gotten one yet and I thought, ‘I guess this is it for me,'” Grimes recalls. “And then I got a call and said, ‘It’s going to be CBS primetime and it’s going to be more of a procedural format.'”
Marshals airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
