Xbox announced a delay of Fable from the previously announced launch window this fall to February 2027, explaining that they wanted to try to give the revival role-playing series “the dedicated time it deserves.”
Making the news just ahead of Summer Game Fest, where it will still be part of the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, their statement on social networks bed :
This year is full of incredible games for XBOX gamers, from Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 to Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Grand Theft Auto VI. To schedule our game launches over the holidays, in a way that works best for players, we’re moving Fable to February 2027 so it can get the dedicated time it deserves. We’re excited to give players a major new look at Fable, as well as our broader lineup, at the XBOX Games Showcase on June 7.
In other words, Grand Theft Auto 6 is still scheduled to launch on November 19 and Take Two isn’t backing down from that date, so they’re trying to avoid that. What this means, however, is that the end of 2026 for Xbox gaming will be all about shooters, with Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, and Modern Warfare 4 coming from Microsoft’s teams.
Fable’s new launch target now means it will arrive close to two other anticipated RPGs, with Exodus from ex-BioWare team Archetype and The Expanse: Osiris Rising from Owlcat Games both targeting the first half of next year. Then again, they’re both sci-fi adventures, so Fable will definitely stand out from them.
Fable was shown off during the Developer Direct stream in January, giving the first good look we’ve had at Fable, after years of development and teasers.
You begin the game as a child, growing up in Briar Hill, which is when your heroic powers first emerge, making you Albion’s first hero in a generation. But your town and all its inhabitants are suddenly turned to stone by a stranger. You have to venture out to understand what’s going on.
It’s a huge open world, from Bowerstone and Fairfax Castle to the windswept town of Bloodstone. You can play the game at your own pace, become a real estate tycoon, a blacksmith, have kids, and all the other things people loved about the original. Playground has created over a thousand people to populate this world, get up, go to work, have hobbies, go to bed and do it all again. How you treat them and the decisions you make throughout the story will also fuel a moral system.
Originally announced at the start of the generation in 2020, it took three long years before we saw the game next, and then another year after that, when the release was set for 2025. But in February last year, the release was delayed to 2026. Head of Xbox Games Studios Craig Duncan said: “While I know this may not be the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people is that it definitely worth the wait, and I have unequivocal confidence. in the Playground team. It is now 2027.
Fable arrives at the same time on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC. Oh, and Game Pass higher tiers, of course.
