On Wednesday, the Philippines obtained 49 votes out of 191 after four rounds of voting, while Kyrgyzstan obtained 142 votes and obtained the Asia-Pacific region’s seat on the Security Council for the period 2027-2028.
Under its composition, the Council includes five permanent members with veto power – the United States, China, Russia, the United Kingdom and France – and 10 elected members, with the latter group serving a two-year term.
Kyrgyzstan’s next term will be its first on the council, and only the second time a Central Asian country has held a seat, after Kazakhstan in 2017-18.
The General Assembly also elected Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe, with Germany being crushingly defeated in its final attempt to join the Council.
