US President Donald Trump said that the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz “will now be lifted” after reaching a proposed agreement with Iran.

The agreement described by Trump assumes that Iran must meet conditions set by the United States, and this includes allowing Iran the safe passage of all maritime traffic through the narrow shipping channel in the Persian Gulf region.

“Iran must agree that it will never possess a nuclear weapon or bomb,” Trump said in a social media post.

“Ships stuck in the strait due to our astonishing and unprecedented naval blockade, which will now be lifted, may begin Operation ‘Return Home!’”


The Strait of Hormuz has been a focal point of conflict in the Middle East since fighting began at the end of February. The choke point holds about a fifth of the world’s supply of crude oil, as well as fertiliser, natural gas and other resources vital to global economies – including Canada’s.
